Winter Solstice on Carrauntoohil
This December 21st, join Richard The Mountain Guy for a special guided winter ascent of Carrauntoohil. He'll lead you on a challenging solstice hike to Ireland's highest peak.
Walk into the heart of winter, chasing the low, lingering light across a frosted landscape.
Our goal, to stand on the summit as the sun rises.
Starting point and Finish point is the same.
Depart - 5.30am
Distance - 14km
Duration - 6/7 Hours
Headtorch/Hi Vis
Walking Boots/Shoes are a must, you’ll be walking 6-7 hours and the ground under foot is uncertain in places.
(NO runners, converse, flip flops or sandles or any open foot wear)
Denim or jeans are not to be worn. Spare socks and clothes, dress warm and comfortable (better to have too many layers ) It will be 10 degrees cooler at the summit.

At Cronin's Yard at 5.15am, walk starts at 5.30am
- Walkers must follow the advice of all Guides at all times.
- No runners/sandals or wellingtons to be worn, appropriate hiking footwear ONLY.
- Allow for all weather conditions, i.e. rain jacket and other waterproof clothes.
- As all the MacGillycuddy Reeks are privately owned lands, which are actively farmed, we ask people to please bear this in mind.
